Update on Fall Events

Congrats to everyone who participated in the Archer Co. Food Show. It was the largest food show in several years. Good luck to those advancing to district this Saturday in Vernon!

Livestock & Home Ec Show Catalog
Everyone should have received the Show Catalog in the mail. It is bright Orange this year. The entry forms are inside the catalog. If you did not receive yours, or you need more entry forms, the catalog is available online at the Archer Co. Extension Web Page. You can download the catalog & forms directly by clicking here.

Entries for both the livestock show and home ec show are due December 5. There is a late fee for any entries past this date.

Livestock Jackpots -- there are several jackpots available that are great practice for both 4-Hers and their animals. I've linked the flyers for each jackpot to the LINKS section of this blog.

November 4-H Meeting
The next AC 4-H Meeting is Tuesday, November 18 at 7 at the Extension Office. Photographer Kelly Mobley will talk about things to consider when taking pictures for the photography contest (with the stock show). We will also plan the 4-H club's booth for Christmas on the Square (December 6th). If you'd like to help chair this committee, please notify Jill.

Rabbit Orders
Those who ordered rabbits, they will be in sometime around December 1st. We hope to have a more exact date soon, but now's the time to get ready for your little furry friends! When they arrive, you will be expected to take them home that day, so make sure you've got a hutch, feed, water dispenser, etc. Information on caring for your rabbits is available in a handout at the extension office.

Community Service Projects
Keep collecting the "pop tops" off of your favorite canned drinks. We will have a collection tub at the meeting. Remember, each 1 gallon jug of pop tops will pay for a child's chemotherapy treatment! This is a great way to help other kids out.

Also, if you've got nice, clean or new stuffed animals, bring those to the meeting as well for Operation Hugables. These stuffed animals will be given to kids whose parents are sent overseas in the military.

In early December, we will schedule a shopping trip to buy presents for someone on the Archer City Angel Tree. If you'd like to go, sign up at the November meeting.

Horse Quiz Bowl
There is a Horse Quiz Bowl Meeting on Monday evening, Nov. 10 at 6:30 at the Extension Office.

Foods Workshop Sunday!

The AC Foods Workshop is this Sunday, Oct 5 from 2-4 at the Extension Office. We will cook a healthy and fun snack, play games & all kinds of fun food things. Cost is $7 per 4-Her to cover supplies and food. If you want to come or have questions, please call (631-4658) or email Jill (you can reply to this blog email) so she will have enough food & supplies for everyone. Interested in the County Food Show? Try to bring a recipe or idea of what you'd like to prepare.

If you missed the first meeting, or lost your Food & Nutrition Project Info handout, you can download another one HERE.

Way to go Club!---- Thanks to all the hurricane relief supplies you brought to the last meeting, we were able to donate 7 Disaster Kits to the Salvation Army! They were so excited to receive these supplies! Great job, everyone!

Livestock Project Validation Dates

Veterinary Science
I've scheduled a vet to speak at the October meeting on general veterinary care of animals (dogs, cats, horses, your livestock projects, etc). This will be the first in a series of lessons on vet science. Others will be "hands on" activities.

Archer 4-H Can Help with Ike!!

The Extension Office just received notification of a state-wide community service project to help those impacted by Hurricane Ike. 4-H members are asked gather some cleaning supplies from the list below so South Texas residents can have the needed supplies & buckets to begin the cleanup when they return home.

We will assemble these cleaning buckets at the Tuesday, Sept. 16th meeting. (Poster making may get put on the back burner!) We will place the supplies in 5 gallon buckets (with lids) and we will draw a 4-H clover on the buckets so recipients will know 4-H is here to help. Please only bring NEW supplies from the list. The buckets will be taken to the local Red Cross collection center. The Red Cross, in agreement with the State of Texas for disaster assistance, have the network to get these supplies to the distribution hub that services the effected areas.

You can purchase some of these items yourself, or ask your friends and neighbors to contribute. Don't feel like you must bring everything on the list, just bring what you can. If you have questions, please call Jill at 631-4658 or Kathryn, extension agent, at 574-4914.

See you Tuesday with your cleaning stuff!!!!

The items are as follows:
• Bleach, 82 ounces
• 5 gallon bucket with a lid
• 5 scouring pads
• 7 sponges
• 1 scrub brush
• 18 cleaning towels
• Liquid laundry detergent, 50 ounces
• Household cleaner, 12- to 16-ounce bottle
• Disinfectant dish soap, 16- to 28-ounce bottle
• 50 clothes pins
• Clothesline, 100 feet
• 5 masks, N-95 rating
• 2 pairs of latex gloves
• 1 pair of work gloves
• 24-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33- to 45-gallons.
• Air freshener, 8- or 9-ounce can

Any combination of these items will be accepted.

County Banquet Set, Other Deadlines

Archer City 4-H eNews...
For many of you, this may be your first glance at Jill's trial of an eNewsletter for our club. I hope it serves as a way to keep families notified of upcoming events and activities. If you have something to add, please let Jill know. In the mean time, take a look around our website with our picture page, calendar page and more!

If you did not receive the 4-H Newsletter, you can download it HERE. New members are just getting added to the data base, so you may not have received the newsletter via mail or email.

4-H Calendar

I've set up a 4-H Calendar with a Google Calendar page. You can access it by clicking HERE, or there is a link on the right column of this web page. I will put shows, jackpots, workshops, meetings, etc. in this calendar. If you have something to add to the calendar, please let Jill know.

County Banquet
The Archer County Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, October 19th at 6 p.m. Traditionally, this event is Covered Dish, so invite all of your family and celebrate the accomplishments of 4-H.

Even if you are new to 4-H, we encourage you to come. ALL 4-H members (even newly enrolled ones) will be recognized at the banquet, so please make sure they sign in at the door.

Livestock Projects
Sheep & Goats -- If you plan on showing at a Major Stock Show, State tags MUST be ordered by Sept. 1. Call Travis at the Extension office to order your tag. Tags for the County Show will be due a bit later, but if you know you are showing a lamb or goat, please let Travis know.

Rabbits -- If you plan on showing rabbits, please tell Travis so he can put you on the Rabbit Order List. If you have questions about showing rabbits, call Jill or Travis.

Poultry -- If you are interested in showing a turkey or chickens, call the office ASAP to get your name on the poultry order. Chickens will arrive in November, Turkeys arrive soon. Questions about poultry? Call Travis or Jill.

Food & Nutrition Project

If you're interested in learning about cooking, baking or grilling and nutrition, join us at the Food & Nutrition Workshop, on Sunday, October 5th. This will be a 2-hour workshop, with several different stations the kids will "rotate" through. These stations will all be "hands on" with experiments and games. And yes, boys are welcome too! We had some boys last year, and I think they had great fun. We will also be discussing the County Food Show (scheduled for Oct. 19th at 2 p.m., before the County Banquet)

Participating in the County Food Show is optional. 4-Hers can come to the workshop even if they don't want to do the Food Show. At the Food Show, 4-Hers prepare a dish and tell a judge how they made it. Categories for dishes are: Main Dish, Bread & Cereal, Fruit & Vegetable, Nutritious Snacks and Desserts. If you'd like to participate at the Food Show, have some dishes in mind before you come to the workshop. Last year we had several kids qualify for the District Food Show by winning at the County Level. Two 4-Hers won their categories at District, against 23 other counties. We'd love for Archer to have a strong presence at the Food Show.

4-Hers can also prepare food for the Home Economics Show in January. If you're interested in the Food Project and have questions, give Jill a call at 631-4658.
